Jan 18, 2008
Getting a new dog is a very exciting experience, and sometimes it is easy to overlook some important things in all of the excitement. One thing that is often overlooked by many dog owners is training for aggressive dogs. In fact, it often never crosses their minds until their dog's aggression has become a major problem.

Aggression is a serious problem that can be easily avoided by owners taking the time to educate themselves about dog training for aggressive behavior. If you have dog, then you need to be able to recognize the early warning signs of aggression and be prepared to help your dog overcome whatever issues are causing the aggressive behavior. Here are four things that every dog owner should know about helping a dog with aggression.

1. Take Your Dog To The Vet

Before you begin any type training for aggressive dogs, you should first make an appointment with your vet. It's quite possible that there is something physically wrong with your dog, and the aggression they are exhibiting is the result of pain. If there is something medically wrong with your dog, you want to find out and have them treated as soon as possible. Veterinarians are also an excellent source of information, and can often provide you with helpful advice on how to treat aggressive dog behavior.

2. Have Your Dog Spayed Or Neutered

Aggression is just one of many reasons that it is a good idea to spay or neuter your dog. Training for aggressive behavior is much easier and more successful with dogs that have been fixed because you aren't having to battle with their hormones.

3. Let Your Dog Socialize With Other Dogs

When learning how to help an aggressive dog, you really need to understand that proper socialization is extremely important. When dogs are not properly socialized they become afraid of other dogs and people. They then manifest their fear by acting aggressively towards every stranger they come in contact with. You must provide your dog with plenty of opportunities to socialize with other dogs and people so that they can learn that not every stranger is a threat.

If you think that your dog's aggression could result in any type of violence towards another dog or human, then you must take proper precautions while out in public. If you are worried about the possibility of your dog biting someone, then you should use a muzzle. When you are at an off-leash dog park, you should keep your dog on a leash until you are confident that they are relaxed and will not attack. If you do not feel comfortable taking your dog out in public, then contact someone who specializes in training for aggressive dogs. They can accompany you and help you with the socialization process.

4. Always Praise And Never Punish Your Dog

Dogs are incredibly affectionate and loyal and they live to please their owners. That is why treating them with love and and praising them when they are good instead of punishing them when they are bad is how to treat aggressive dog behavior. If you punish them, you do nothing more than teach them to be anxious and afraid, which in turn leads to aggressive behavior.

It takes a lot of love and patience to raise a happy, well-behaved dog. Training for aggressive behavior is also very important, and is something that every dog owner should be well acquainted with. Make sure that you are familiar with training for aggressive dogs so that you are fully prepared to help your dog with any aggression problems that may arise.
