Home Makeovers Are Cost Effective

Jan 22, 2008
Many people are attracted to home makeovers suggestions made by friends and relatives because they are cost effective methods for hanging the home interior or exterior surfaces without incurring great expense. It makes more sense to a homeowner to make minor changes to one or two rooms in a home rather than incur the cost of major changes such as wall replacements, room additions or installing new shingling on the exterior of the home.

To make home makeovers more cost effective, the homeowner might choose to relocate various pieces of furniture to other rooms in the home. This would alleviate the cost of buying new desks if an old one in the back office can be sanded down and resurfaced with a shiny new coat of lacquer that would give the furniture a brand new look at very little expense. The wooden frames of a bunk bed set could be revitalized and used as wall shelving if the homeowner was talented with a router.

A homeowner could spruce up the yard just by finding other uses for leftover brick that have been in the yard since the house was built. The bricks could be used to frame an oval porch that was created when the homeowner decided to use the cement in the corner of the garage which was leftover from the driveway currently in use which was built many years before. Other items that could prove very useful when the homeowner entertains outside. A bricked in fireplace could serve two purposes by warming guests in the winter and cooking meals during the summer that make staying at home more enjoyable than traveling away on vacation.

Attics are great places to explore when searching for items to use for a home makeover. Antique furniture could be taken to a dealer and auctioned off for a very good price. That money could be used to buy items that the family could enjoy everyday of the year, such as a whirlpool spa. That luxurious item would definitely look great on the new polished deck on the porch that was recently renovated with non-skid surfaces that were intentionally placed to keep the family safe.

To make home makeover changes last, the homeowner might institute some new rules for people that live in various spaces. To maintain the pristine finish on a newly painted wall, the homeowner might outlaw the use of any nails or prohibit any picture frames from being placed on the wall. This cost effective method for preserving a home makeover will be used when the homeowner plans to list the home on the real estate market and does not want to repaint the home or patch any existing holes put in the wall after the space has been freshly painted.

Fresh wall designs can be achieved with the application of painter's tape and some careful shading. The headboard for an old bedroom set can be reestablished as a comfortable resting place for the head with the aid of some foam cushions and a bit of sewing on fabrics bought on sale. With the addition of a few sports posters and a basketball hoop on the door, the children might be tempted to throw a hoop shot and keep the floor free of dirty clothes clutter. To complete the effect, the parents might consider dyeing scatter rugs that were found in the attic with colors that project the team colors of the child's favorite basketball team.
