Jan 22, 2008
As a pet owner, you are probably very concerned about the ingredients that go into commercial dog food. There have been recent recalls on dog food, which have now exposed it as being far from the best option to give to your pet. In many cases these food contain high amounts of fillers, artificial colors as well as unnatural flavors. In most cases, commercial dog food is made using low quality meat, which has been imported from other countries where standards of quality are not met. If you are at all concerned about your dog's health, then making your own healthy homemade dog food is a great option.

Although you may think it is going to be difficult to prepare meals for your dog then think again. When it comes to thinking about producing your own healthy homemade dog food you should first discuss the matter with your vet. They will often be able to provide you with some guidelines to follow which can make your search for the ideal recipes much easier. They will be able to tell you exactly when looking at recipes which are healthy and which are not. Each meal should contain sufficient amounts of meat, grain and vegetables in them which your vet will tailor to suit your dog's nutritional requirements. They may even come up with a plan that suits your particular breed of dog.

Once you have this information, then you can begin to search for recipes. You have a number of different ways of being able to get hold such recipes either you can purchase a book or you can look online for them instead. Always be aware, however, that free recipes may not contain all the necessary ingredients that your dog needs. So be sure to compare each recipe against the guidelines, which you have received from your vet, in order to make sure that it is nutritionally sound.

After finding some recipes to try out you need to purchase the ingredients that are to go in them. Again only use the best quality ingredients that you can as this will ensure that the homemade dog food is not only healthy but nutritional as well. When it comes to selecting the ingredients you are going to buy select the same kinds as you would normally select when preparing a meal for yourself. Avoid those foods which have been processed, not only are they lacking essential nutrients but they can also have an adverse affect on your pet.

When shopping for these ingredients it is wise to spend time looking at what is available and comparing everything. Often people will use the much cheaper cuts of meat in the butchers to make up meals for their dogs. But if you want why not tell the butcher what you need exactly and he may offer some cuts that he would not normally sell and these could cost you even less.

As for preparing and cooking the dogs food you can actually make the whole process much easier for yourself if you were to do it when preparing meals for the rest of the family. Then once they have been prepared all you need to do is place them in a container (clearly marked dog food) in the fridge or freezer and then take them out when needed.

Also by cooking large amounts of their food at any one time say on a weekly or monthly basis will save you the time and cost of actually having to get and prepare the fresh ingredients each day. By planning carefully which recipes you are going to use and when they are cooked will make the whole process of preparing homemade dog food much easier for you.
