Planning Your Next Vacation

Jan 22, 2008
Vacations are at a premium for many people. Alas, the privilege of a limitless amount of vacation time and money is not an actuality. In order to make the most of premium vacation time, shrewd preparation is essential.

When planning a vacation the first thing that pops into many people's minds is "Where should we go?" This may be the most important decisions one will make in regards to a vacation. Don't know where to go? Do some research! The internet is a wonderful resource for vacation planning.

You can find information on destinations, where to stay, how to get there, what to do, and where to eat. Another resource for vacation planning is your local bookstore or library. You can spend an afternoon thumbing through travel books, imagining yourself in an exotic locale.

Also, don't forget to ask family, friends, and even co-workers for ideas on a vacation destination. It is always helpful to get first hand knowledge of a location from someone who has been there. They can steer you in the right direction and point out things you should avoid. When considering your destination you should keep several things in mind. First, who will be going on this trip? Will it be you and a significant other/spouse? Will you be traveling with children or parents? Friends? Will it be a large group or a small group?

Once you know who is going on the trip, you then have to consider the likes and dislikes of each of the travelers. For instance, it might not be wise to plan a rugged, outdoors wilderness trip for a group that consists of teenagers who would prefer to spend their time inside a mall. Not only would they be miserable, but you run a good chance of making yourself miserable. Likewise, it might not be the best idea to charter a sailboat if your group includes someone who is prone to motion sickness.

When you have decided who you will be going with and what their likes and dislikes are you can move on to fixing a budget. Budget planning might not put you in a vacation mind set but it is a crucial part of vacation planning. Of course, if you are rich and have more money than you know what to do with, you can pass over this part of the article. Unfortunately, many of us cannot assert to be rich and therefore must set a budget if we want to take a vacation.

When you are budgeting for a vacation you need to consider several things. First, how much do you have to spend? This will probably clarify your destination. You may have big plans of a European vacation but your budget might only allow for a weekend at a state park. Be practical when establishing a vacation budget. Not only should you prepare for where you are staying and how you are going to get there, but also for food, gas, admission fees to events, and keepsakes. Lots of people may wonder how much they need to budget for all these things. Once your lodging and transportation is covered a good rule of thumb is to allot 100 dollars per day per person. This should encompass most of your expenses.

Where you end up vacationing will in the end determine how much you should allocate for expenses. If you plan to stay at the beech for a week and stay in a condo where you can cook your own meals, you will need a lot less than if you planned a big trip to Europe.

In a nutshell, take some time to plan and research and you can have a great time on your vacation.
