Save Money At Your Halloween Party With These Six Steps

Jan 23, 2008
Holding a Halloween party is great fun but it can really empty your wallet. Lots of people need lots of food. And a good party needs decorations, costumes, and entertainment. But that's okay - even with a small budget you can have a great time. Here's six tips to save money on your next Halloween party.

1. Try a potluck. Why plan snacks yourself, when your guests can bring the food. But tell your guests if you're making the main dish or the desserts. Or instead of a meal, try finger foods if you're party's at night. But if you want a meal, make it simple like sandwiches or cold cuts.

2. Don't spend a fortune on a costume. You'll have lots of other expenses. Rather than buying a costly costume, make your own home-made version. A pair of overalls and a shirt can become a farmer's costume or a bed sheet can be a great start as a toga or a ghost. Rake through your closet and become inspired.

3. Plan early. Stock up on party supplies in November, if you hold a party every year. Fresh food and candy needs to be bought fresh, but costumes and decorations can be bought in November when they go on sale. Party supplies stores are an obvious choice. But check out discount stores and department stores too.

4. Get double the use for your money. Look for items that can be used more than once in different ways. For example, pumpkins can serve as great decorations, kids can decorate them with paint during the party as a fun activity, and then you can use the insides to make delicious pies or other baked goods the next day. If nothing else, save your decorations from year to year. Garland, fake spider webs, and lights can be used again and again.

5. Keep it small. Invite only your close friends to your party. Or make it adults only. Don't invite the whole neighborhood. Keep the invite list small. Everyone knows planning a large party is hard work and expensive. They'll understand if they're not invited.

6. Buy in bulk. When you can, buy items in bulk-especially candy. You can find great deals if you buy larger sized bags, and whatever candy you don't use you can stick in the freezer to use throughout the year.

Remember, your party should be fun, not stressful. If money stresses you out, consider scaling back on your party or enjoy the holiday by going out to others' parties. At the very least, use the tips above to save money on your party.
