Proteinuria: When Diabetes Vents Its Wrath On Your Kidneys!

Jan 24, 2008
A disease which attacks at multifarious levels, diabetes is most notorious for the high levels of blood glucose it brings about, which brings about a plethora of devastating complications in the body, ranging from Diabetic Retinopathy, heart disease and even neural disorders. All these diseases can be attributed to the immense damage the glucose-satiated blood inflicts on the blood vessels, weakening them and obstructing their functioning. Of these, a very common, yet relatively unknown complication induced by diabetes is Proteinuria.

The clinical definition of Proteinuria terms it as a condition in which your body increases abnormally high amounts of proteins with your urine. This complication is caused by a fault in the functioning of the kidneys which are equipped with filters to eliminate the waste produced as a result of digestive and metabolic activities while retaining the nutrients which your body needs to function effectively. Proteins fall under the second category, given their role in helping the body recover and build muscle mass.

The size of protein particles is significantly larger than that of the particles of waste matter. Thus, when the kidneys are healthy, these protein particles are retained by the renal filters, while the waste material is discarded. In a diabetic body, however, the functioning of the filters is impaired by the damage the glucose-rich blood has caused them, and these particles of protein are eliminated along with the other toxic matter in the individual's body. Over time, as larger amounts of proteins are discarded by the kidneys, the individual develops a deficiency, which impairs the growth of muscle tissue in his body.

Initially, albumin is the only protein to be excreted by your kidneys as a result of Proteinuria. However, when this disease complicates, several other kinds of proteins are flushed out of your body as well. This is a sure sign that your kidneys have already suffered a tremendous amount of damage, which over time, can result in kidney failure.

As a diabetic, the risk of Proteinuria is tremendously heightened, given the fact that there is already a significant amount of blood vessel-damage that you suffer from. Diabetes experts recommend that victims of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes regularly test for Proteinuria to prevent it from escalating into its more severe stages. The extent to which your condition has developed can be diagnosed by the kind of proteins being excreted with your urine, which determines the treatment that is recommended to you.

Victims of Proteinuria also display several physical symptoms like foamy urine and an unusual swelling in their hands and feet. However, waiting for these symptoms to develop before testing for Proteinuria may not be as effective, as these conditions are only palpable when the condition is tremendously exacerbated.

The treatment which is prescribed for diabetes-induced Proteinuria is in effect, the very precautions recommended to diabetics to keep their blood sugar under control. This is because the blood vessel damage caused by diabetes does reverse over time, if the blood glucose levels are maintained at a stable level. If the diabetic has also been diagnosed with high blood pressure, then certain medicines like angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers have been known to aid the process of renal healing and recovery. Although diverse, all complications which arise out of diabetes are still alike in the fact that they stem from a mismanaged condition. The best way to avert these complications is to assume control of your diabetes today! This one step could be a valuable one to take in ensuring you a long, healthy and fulfilling life!
