Applying Will Power To Curb Food Cravings

Jan 26, 2008
I am a huge fan of will power. I believe what ever you set your mind to will come to pass if you work hard at it. I have applied this principle from way back at school, in my career as an employee seeking a promotion and in my businesses in later years. Okay I'm not as old as you may think now but am just saying will power makes things happen.

From as far as I can remember I have always been confronted with the issue of food cravings and body weight gain. I am this kind of person who can not afford to compromise my eating habit. Take one piece of chocolate and I'll blow up like a balloon in a matter of days. Like I said earlier, I have always exercised will power in everything I do yet I have lived with the problem of food cravings and weight gain for years.

I would determine in my heart to stop eating junk food and actually stop doing it. Most often it would happen when someone has made me self conscious by commenting about my weight or my eating habits. Once that self-consciousness and uneasiness die down, I would find myself back at it again. This is a cycle that has been going on for years.

Recently I learnt that will power alone is not the key in anything in life. Will power is the key to set you on your path to your destiny but you need more than that to take your vision to the end. Knowledge is power, they say and I agree. I have since leant that it is important to understand how the body function in order to curb food cravings.

Knowing the chemical imbalances that go on when I take this food and that food and when I do not eat that food and that fruit etc. has been a break through in trying to curb my food cravings.

To summarize it for you. There are hormones that are responsible for our moods and energy. The feel good hormones - one of them is called serotonin. These need to be present in acceptable levels in our bodies in order for us to feel good. The absence of these lead to depression, anxiety, irritability, which of cause may lead to binging or rather eating too much.

It is argued by some researchers that food cravings are body's way of "demanding" nutrients it lacks. For example, sugar cravings can be caused by low blood sugar levels. Of course some cravings can be based on other various physiological needs. Carbohydrate cravings by people who exercise a lot could be caused by a reduction of glycogen stores, which carbohydrates replenish.

If you have difficulty sleeping or under a lot of stress you probably feel tired most of the time. This will lead to adrenal exhaustion. Now, again your brain will pick up the signals and you will start to feel a craving for something to consume in order to lift your spirit. You will find yourself eating Carbohydrate snacks or drinking coffee or even alcohol all of which will add on to your cravings as discussed earlier.

So understanding how these hormones are maintained and the foods to eat in order to keep them in check is important in your fight against food cravings.
