Are Eggs "in" Again?

Jan 26, 2008
You know how the medical community likes to flip flop? One year studies "show" milk is great. Then the next year they say "milk is the devil." Then the next year they're like "how come you guys aren't drinking your milk?" Like it's a trend that goes in and out of season. Ah yes. Polka dots, plaid skirts, big purses...and eggs.

"Are eggs ok?" Eggs are high in cholesterol. If you have heart problems, then you should avoid them. Or have just the egg whites, which have no cholesterol. Otherwise, healthy people can have a few eggs. "Is milk good for you?" (not if you're lactose intolerant). "I heard cheese was bad." Don't always eat full-fat cheeses. Use low or reduced fat cheeses sometimes. "What about sushi?" (fine, as long as its handled properly) They try to drag corn's name through the mud, saying it has no nutritional value (that's not true).

Soon someone will say "water is bad for your health" and everyone will go crazy and dehydrate themselves to death. People have questions about alcohol because certain studies show it can be good for the heart. Personally I will never recommend it because of religious reasons. Scientifically, the harm outweighs any benefits. First of all, alcohol is a depressant. It slows the function of the central nervous system, blocking signals to the brain. It destroys the liver, causes birth defects, and a bunch of other stuff.

What about butter? Is it better than margarine? Well margarine is made with vegetable oils, so there is no cholesterol. While butter is made from animal fat and is high in cholesterol. So margarine is usually better. But some might be worse than butter. Many margarines use a process called hydrogenation, which adds trans fats to the product. Usually, the more solid it is, the more trans fats it has. So stick margarine would have more than tub margarine. Try to find a product with the least amount of trans fats.

Mercury has also been a concern for many who love seafood. Mercury is found naturally in the environment and also released from industrial pollution. Most fish have some traces of mercury in it. Pregnant women and women trying to get pregnant should stay away from eating fish like king mackerel, shark, trout and tuna, which have higher levels of mercury. But for most adults, it's not a big problem.

Many people and companies rave about diets. Low-fat/low carb/ might as well eat cardboard diets. Fat is essential to your body. And it can actually help you manage weight loss. Fat makes you feel fuller, for longer, and you'll be less likely to want to eat more. If you always eat low fat foods, you won't feel as satisfied, and you may eat more and more. That's why those diets usually don't work and you end up gaining weight. Let me just say, that it is never good to totally cut out essential nutrients. You need fat, you need carbs, you need sugar, you need salt. Just spread it around and don't eat too much of it.
