New Camcorder Tips - 5 Important Factors To Consider

Jan 27, 2008
Camcorder technology is significantly improving, if the new models introduced at the recent consumer electronics show are any indication. New developments in face detection technology and stabilization factors lead the way, and anyone considering a new camcorder purchase will likely appreciate the enhancements. Here's a list of five key factors to consider before you buy.

Tip One: Consider What You Really Need

Sony and Panasonic have rolled out new models featuring face detection technology, which may or may not be worth the added investment for you. Ask yourself if you've been happy with facial images with your current model. If the answer is no, you'll be pleased to hear that face detection technology will automaticaly resolve any blurring or over exposure problems.

Tip Two: Are You A Steady Hand?

A camcorder will always offer image stabilization technology. This technology overcomes a less than steady hand while shooting video, and is either electronic or optical. Optical image stabilization usually provides better results. Make sure you really need it by asking yourself if you're happy with electronic image stabilization commonly found in moderately priced camcorders. Also, be aware that optical image technology is slowly but surely becoming more affordable.

Tip Three: Long Timer Or Short Timer?

Camcorder batteries are another potential add on expense. Is it worth it to pay extra for an upgrade? It all depends on how long you typically shoot footage. If you normally shoot less than an hour at a time, the standard battery should suit you just fine. Consider investing the extra $75 or so if you tend to shoot for extended periods of time.

Tip Four: What Screen Size Is Best?

In general, the bigger the screen, the easier it'll be to see what you're recording. However, some larger screens don't work as well in bright sunlight, so ask yourself where you'll take most of your video. Do you tend to shoot more video indoors in consistent light levels, or outside where light can be inconsistent? The same is true if you take a lot of video in low light levels. If so, be sure you have the most appropriate shutter mode so your video doesn't turn out blurry.

Tip Five: Recording The Sound You Intended To Record

With a camcorder, sound and often be just as important as video. To ensure clear, uninterrupted sound, consider a zoom microphone. Working in tandem with a zoom lens, a zoom microphone is an upgrade feature that eliminates interference from other voices. If sound clarity is a priority for you, this will be well worth the added cost.

Taking these five tips into consideration will help ensure there's a good match between you and your new camcorder. Make sure to purchase a model that includes features you'll use and enjoy for years to come. If you do decide to pursue the latest technology, be certain the features and upgrades solve a nagging problem you're currently experiencing, otherwise the added cost will be nothing more than added cost.
