Diabetes: Have You Checked The Chromium Front Lately?

Jan 29, 2008
Although diabetes is far from a new age phenomenon, modern-day lifestyles and flawed food habits have had a large part to play in influencing the onset of diabetes in the vulnerable, while making management a lot more difficult for those who have already fallen prey to this disease. Until recent times, diabetes treatment was largely limited to medication and insulin injections, which have drawn themselves equal numbers of detractors as they have attracted followers. In light of the often detrimental side and after-effects allopathic medication can have on he overall health and wellbeing of diabetics, researchers have begun to pay a lot more attention to supplementing diabetes treatment with nutritional aids and overall lifestyle changes to make management and recovery a less tedious and a lot more effortless. One such nutritional supplement that has caught the eye of researchers is chromium.

Chromium is one of the fundamental constituents of every organism and is found in the body as Chromium Picolinate. This biologically active form of chromium helps the cells of the body become more responsive to the insulin that is produced, thus forming an integral part of the digestive process. Although a trace mineral, research has found that chromium deficiencies can largely influence the development of diabetes, while even moderate levels chromium picolinate when administered as supplements, have been known to significantly lower blood glucose levels.

Studies which have been conducted on a wide spectrum of participants have also indicated that chromium picolinate plays a very crucial role in normalizing blood sugar levels in individuals diagnosed as suffering from Type 2 Diabetes and even those who fall into the category of obese. Chromium is absorbed by the small intestine, which is designed to absorb only minute levels of chromium, given the fact that the human body requires only 6 mg to function normally. However, when an individual suffers from diabetes, the chromium absorptive capacity of his small intestine is further reduced, thereby creating chromium deficits which further hinder his diabetes treatment.

Supplements of chromium have been medically proved to have no safety issues, given the fact that the American Institute of Medicine does not recommend an upper limit for the amounts of chromium that can be consumed. Chromium is of more assistance to Type 2 diabetics as it targets the receptor cells in the body, determining the number of receptors to be devoted to insulin. This has sparked a glimmer of hope in the medical fraternity, with some researchers hypothesizing the reversal of diabetes with chromium therapy alone.

However, the effectiveness of chromium as a diabetic nutritional aid is still questioned by a number of experts who decry the negative impact chromium has on the neurotransmitters. As per their observations, this effect deems chromium as damaging to individuals who are diagnosed with depression, bipolar disorders and schizophrenia. Chromium supplements also trigger skin irritations in those who are not agreeable with the fluctuating chromium levels in their body.

You can give your diet a chromium boost by including foods and condiments like black pepper, broccoli, dry beans and whole grains. For other sources, you can try supplements which contain chromium by itself, or as a combination with other vitamins and minerals.

Chromium has yet to find popularity amongst diabetics and medical practitioners as a nutritional aid. However, with the advances that are being made in research and specialized studies, more and more experts are turning to chromium as a significant part of diabetes management, lauding it for the encouragingly high success ratio it boasts of, while also approving of the absence of detrimental side effects. When used under medical supervision, Chromium is a very effective way to deal with diabetes and bring your wayward glucose levels under control. Controlling your diabetes can be as effortless or difficult as you want the process to be. what matters the most is to view your disease as something you need to control instead of having diabetes chalk out your life for you once implemented, the results this approach brings about are nothing short of magnificent!
