Turning Your Goals Into Reality-2nd Part Of Goal Setting Series

Feb 1, 2008
A good method to have an completed list is to make a daily and weekly set of goals. With this, you will always be in a situation where you are in control of what's going on towards your life. Each day you'll have a chance to fulfill a certain goal - leaving you with a sense of accomplishment.

These are some things that should be noted when it comes to setting goals and achieving them. I have listed and checked resources for you to read more.

Prayers and reading the Bible play a very large part in setting and achieving your goals. Try to find out if there is anything in your plans/goals which does not fit God's purpose. If there is one, then your plans will be in disarray! If you are not certain about your goals, stop and pray to God for direction and purpose.

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,

Nor stands in the path of sinners,

Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;

But his delight is in the law of the Lord

And in His law he meditates day & night.

Psalm 1:1-2

Becoming educated is the key to your goal's success. If a certain goal demands you to have some know-how, make plans in getting the right knowledge. Spend time each day to work on that education. Like me, I spend at least an hour a day. Why an hour a day? So that I can teach my children to be great leaders as we discuss wonderful ideas in our education together.

A lot of us have the desire to quit their day job and work in the comfort of our own homes. That goal is very good! If doing work at home allows you to have more free time for you and your family, write it down so that you won't forget and work towards that goal. Another goal may be for your children to have an option of working for themselves or have somebody give them their salary. When you feel that God is pointing you in that direction, write it down!

Your family should never be left out of your plans. At the end of this week, write down the goals you have drafted. Share these with your spouse and discuss the pros/cons of each goal. Be sure both parents are in agreement with the goals you have set. If not, go to God and pray for His wisdom. God may want you to submit to your husband's direction which you should do cheerfully. Continue to pray about the difference, but be sure you are always submitting to your hubby. God will reward you for this. I know from experience :-)

Personal financial situations also play a major role in achieving your goals. Have a realistic goal on how much you really want/need to earn. Look at the debt you have accumulated and develop goals to help you eliminate your debt. You also must be able to create plans or stages by which you will be able to reach your earning potential. Be creative (& Biblical) and you will be surprised how God will see you through any financial difficulties.

Fitness and your health should never be taken out of the picture. We spend most of our time idling in front of the computer or TV. Our bodies need the exercise to ward off health problems and disease. Jot down anything about exercise, healthy living and sports for fitness goals.

Physically fit children can attain sport related goals. like playing for a soccer team or a baseball team. You moms should help nurture your children's sports abilities. But, make sure that sports and games do not take too much of your family time. In other words, don't forget family time and prayer in place of too many extracurricular activities.

As the saying goes -'All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy', or something to that effect, is by all means true down to the last the letter. Giving yourself a little pleasure: should be included into your plans. Plan this year to get away with your spouse for at least one weekend. Begin planning now. Get the grandparents to watch your children.

What is talked about above sums up the categories that can be utilized to achieve your goals in all areas of life: Spiritual, Educational, Family, Financial, Health-Fitness, Career/Job and Leisure.

Although it is nice to have long term goals (some 20 or above years), it's better to start with the shorter ones. I would usually think of 5 year goals and 1 year goals. You'll then break them up to 6 month intervals and then to the monthly ones, weekly and lastly daily plans.

In the third part, I'll talk about how to make daily lists that are effective.
