Three Effective Computer Data Protection Tips

Feb 5, 2008
For most people, computers are part of daily life and many people depend on them for their livelihood, entertainment and other important purposes. Since most computers contain important personal data, it becomes evermore important to protect systems from intruders who would compromise a computer system.

Since there are a lot of viruses being produced daily which can steal information from a computer (like passwords, identities and sensitive information) and be used for profit and criminal activities, it becomes evermore critical to know how to protect a personal computer. Among the intruders that can destroy a system are some viruses that delete an entire hard drive's data. In order to respond to these types of problems, it is essential to use computer security techniques to avoid any kind of data breach.

Most people worry about these types of problems, but in my experience, if one has the right computer data protection techniques in place, he or she will not have to worry. The truth is computer data protection is all about prevention and security measures. Prevention of data loss through regular backup, and security to protect potential breaches of an operating system, can make all the difference in the world.

There are several simple techniques which one can use to easily protect computer data:

1. Software to Secure the Computer

It's important to have a good security program as a frontline protection for any personal computing system. The best computer security programs can be found by doing a little online research in order to identify what you might require for your particular needs. There is much information on the Internet that can help you make your decision. The online "computer geek" forums can help one develop an idea of what might be best required for one's system and one's particular patterns of computer usage. Another avenue for research is to visit the free software download sites and read reviews of security software and examine the number of downloads to determine the popularity of a given software. With a little bit of extra information, one is armed to make better and more informed choices regarding how to secure files and protect a computer system from data loss.

A good anti-virus software program provides the foundation of personal computer security. Other security measures include password encryption programs and anti- spyware programs. Many security software programs can be found for free or for a free time limited trial offer at certain download sites on the Internet. Installing and updating the software regularly can ensure that your computer is protected.

2. Computer Backup

Another important thing to do is to create system backups in your computer. Windows can actually save to a certain point in its "lifetime" and go back and restore that system by using the command "system restore." However, to really ensure that data is not lost, most people should invest in good portable hard drive and save their most important data in it so that they can have a physical backup stored outside of their computer. I know some people actually have these things stored in bank vaults and other secure places away from their homes in order to make sure that their information is in one secure area, usually away from their computer. Another back-up option can be found with online services that allow you to backup your personal files to their servers and for a fee, you can "rent space" to ensure that your data is being secured outside of your personal system. For some, however, this is not an acceptable solution as it impinges on the privacy aspect of personal computing. That is why portable hard drives, flash drives, etc, appear to be the preferred back-up modalities of most people.

3. The Maintenance of Routine Updates

This is simply a combination of the first two techniques. Most individuals utilize security software and backup computer data; however, the problem occurs when routine updates are not scheduled. It's important to store and secure programs in a routine fashion and it's especially important to provide routine hard drive backups. I, myself, once lost a lot of computer data due to a poor routine of system backups and it cost a lot of time and money, so I advise routine updates of all information in your backup hard drives.

It is clear, that computer data protection is a critical activity and that regular backups and adequate security will prevent potential data loss from occurring. A little bit of prevention is worth a pound of cure in regards to ensuring that one's personal data is protected and one's computer system is secured.
