Southampton: What To Do In Southampton, Home Of Benny Hill

Feb 7, 2008
Southampton is important in England for a number of reasons. It is still a major port and lays claim to being the one of the largest commercial ports in the whole of Europe. Activities are not limited to freight. Large cruise liners have also been using the port and it was famously home to the Titanic.

Because of the port and other factors, Southampton is the largest city on England's southern coast. Which means that you will find lots of things to see and do when you visit the city.

History fans can marvel at the second longest still-standing medieval wall in England.

The coastal nature of the city is reflected in the Maritime Museum, which (as you'd expect) covers the long maritime history including an exhibition dedicated to the tragic cruise ship, the Titanic.

If you are a boat fan, you will want to make sure that your visit to Southampton is timed to coincide with the annual Southampton Boat Show. But be sure to book your hotel room early so that you can ensure that you are staying somewhere convenient to the show. The show is well worth a visit and often features famous ships, such as the HMS Bounty which was recently featured in the movie Pirates of the Caribbean.

With a large university, the night life in the city is thriving as you would expect. This means that you don't need to be stuck in your hotel room, watching television. Instead you can experience busy pubs and clubs or take a meal out in one of the many local restaurants. Indeed, Southampton was recently voted one of the best places for young people to live in England.

The singer Craig David grew up in the city as did Coldplay's drummer, Will Champion. The comedian Benny Hill was also born in the city. If you remember his song "Ernie (The Fastest Milkman in the West)", head off to the town of Eastleigh which is where Benny had his milk round, which inspired him to write the song.

Theatre fans should check out the shows at the large Mayflower Theatre which often hosts big London West End shows and plays.

Sports fans won't be disappointed. The Southampton Saints regularly play at St Mary's Stadium, which at nearly 33,000 capacity is the largest football stadium in southern England outside the capital, London.

If you get time during your visit to Southampton, you may want to take in some time on a yacht or take a lesson in another water sport. There are numerous marinas and places where you can book a lesson or two to hone your skills or try something new.

If your guest house or hotel doesn't have its own gym, you can still keep fit at the Southampton Sports Centre which has its own ski slope, a theme park for the youngsters or young at heart and a professional standard athletics centre. Indeed, the city prizes fitness and was named the fittest city in the UK in 2006.
