Need A New Camera? Should You Go Digital Or Traditional?

Feb 8, 2008
If you're in the market for a new camera, you're probably wondering whether you should go digital or traditional. The decision will depend on a few different factors, including how you plan to use the camera, and what you do with your photographs once developed.

Some people fear a digital camera would be too complicated for them to use, after years of using a traditional 35mm camera. For people who have never had a digital camera, the main concern is whether or not the photographs you take with the digital camera will be of the same quality as the photographs you get from your regular camera.

The truth is- digital cameras are capable of much higher quality images because of their higher resolution capabilities. Photos that are taken with a digital camera are more clear and have an overall sharper image when compared to a regular camera. The higher the pixel size, the higher the resolution of a digital photo. For traditional cameras that use film, the picture is composed of many light-sensitive crystals that are then chemically processed to get the image to appear on paper. The images produced by digital cameras are made with light-sensitive pixels that will display the image on the camera screen and/or computer monitor. It's that image that can be printed- the equivalent of developing a photograph from a regular camera.

How do you get photographs from a digital camera? You have a few different options. You can purchase a photo printer to create photo prints from home, or you could bring your camera's memory stick into many retail establishments to print from a photo kiosk. Just slide your memory stick or card into the slot, select the photos on the screen you want to print and they will pop out the slot! Alternatively, and for people who print a lot of photographs, you will probably find uploading them to one of the numerous online photo printing companies will be faster and easier. Your photographs will be delivered by mail.

One of the benefits of using a digital camera is the ability to improve a photograph even after it's been taken. If the lighting was poor or the image poorly framed by the photographer- using a photo editing software and a computer enables you to enhance the image or crop it. The only way to improve a traditional photograph taken with a regular camera is to first scan the image into your computer to create a digital image.

It may take you a little time to uncover the various options in a digital camera if you've only ever used a regular camera- but most of the features are easy to operate and with just a little practice you will have no difficulty using them correctly. For people who are serious about their photography- there are digital cameras that look and operate similar to a 35mm SLR camera- which means in no time at all you should have your new camera's functions figured out!
