All You Wanted To Know About Kitchen Cabinet Refacing

Feb 9, 2008
The kitchen cabinet refurbishing is quite a task to do but it is easy when you know its basic principles. By giving a new look to your existing cabinets in the kitchen you can bring in a fresh look of your kitchen altogether. In case you are quite satisfied still with the existing look and condition of the cabinets and do not want to go for an immediate change, then just updating their look by remaking their outer face is quite an intelligent step to take up.

Up to one-third of the total cost of new cabinets can be saved by only refacing them and you can save up to twice the sum that would have been spent if you did the make-over yourself. When going for simple refacing you are also keeping the existing structure of the cabinets intact which are often better and sturdier than the new ones. Giving it a new look with just a few add-on features like better drawer slides, roll-out shelves and so on improves their functionality and that too in a less cost.

The following are a few ideas that you can use for your kitchen cabinet refacing project:

1. Choose a Door Type: In case yours is a conventional face-frame type set of cabinets then you can choose a door or a drawer which will easily fit within the frame, or overlay the frame by half-an-inch or can just be something in the their mean, called a 3/8 inset. Doors that are fully fit inside the cabinets require exact square openings and more precision of fittings for the perfect look. Concealed hinges can be used only in case of the fully inset doors and the overlay type. In case the cabinets are frameless, the doors are either overlay or inset.

2. Choose a Door Style: First of all, you have to make sure of what types are the wood species and profile of the cabinets, i.e. are the panels raised or flat, or are the cabinets of finished paint or unfinished or prefinished natural type. The door you wish to install comes mostly in prefinished type and it is always advisable to order for them. It is more time-saving and be more durable than the one you might have made with a paint. The unfinished types are also a good option as they can be made to match the moldings or the other unfinished components of the whole cabinet set.

3. Choose Hinges: The hinges for the doors should be chosen with great care. You have to first choose the opening capacity of the door, i.e., from 100 to 180 or even the special features like free-swinging or snap-closing types, the adjustability as well as the clearance range for the roll-out shelves, apart from the height-side and depth of the cabinets. It is only after this that you should choose the hinges keeping all the criteria in mind.

4. Measure for Doors and Drawers: The doors and the drawers should be first measured thoroughly before you go for the refacing. You also have to keep in mind the false drawer face that covers the space below your kitchen sink. In case there are single door openings then the dimension should be just twice the overlay amount. As the two doors are covered by a single opening, the overlay amount should be 1/16 to half the width of the opening. The height remains the same as the single door opening. In case of inset doors the width and height should be less by .

5. Measure End Panels: The wall and the panels of the base cabinets which are covered by the plywood and the door panels, should be measured first. In case you are planning to use glass for the cabinet doors then the inside faces of the side and back walls of the cabinets are a must to be measured. A plywood, in keeping with the size, should be made to fit on the faces first.
