How To Stop A Cold Sore Virus

Feb 11, 2008
Are you suffering from the cold sore virus? You may be wondering which form of herpes causes cold sores and which one is associated with sexually transmitted diseases.

If you have cold sores, you're not alone: Approximately 100 million Americans suffer with the herpes simplex type 1 virus. It's this virus that we know causes cold sores. You know how badly cold sores hurt if you've ever had one.

To better understand these two viruses and what makes them different, let's examine them closer.

Genital herpes is caused by the herpes simplex type 2 virus. Approximately 22% of Americans have this virus, also known as HSV-2.

Now here's the scary part: Two thirds of all people infected don't even realize that have the virus! It's already easy to spread, and when you don't even know you have it, it's even easier to give to someone else.

This is caused by having unprotected sex with HSV-2 positive people. It is still important to realize that there is still a risk of catching HSV-2 even with protected sex.

Cold sores, those annoying blisters on your mouth, are caused by herpes simplex type 1. This cold sore virus is highly contagious, and it's absolutely critical that you avoid any skin-to-skin contact during an outbreak.

It is important to not have skin-to-skin contact with a newborn if you have an outbreak of cold sores. The herpes virus is extremely dangerous for babies in their first few weeks of life.

If you have the cold sore virus, it is important that you pay attention to your symptoms. When you feel the initial symptoms coming on, you can help the cold sore heal faster by taking appropriate measures.

Don't wait until the blister forms or starts to weep. When that happens, it's too late to try and prevent its two week existence.

Always remember this: The cold sore virus is extremely contagious until they heal completely. And even after the skin clears and returns to normal, it's still possible that you could spread it.

Seek a doctor's advice if your cold sores take more than two weeks to heal up.
