Should You Try A Chemical Peel For Acne?

Feb 15, 2008
Have you tried every over the counter product you could think of to treat your acne? Have you tried expensive prescription treatments that have had no results? If so, maybe you should consider trying a chemical peel for acne.

A chemical peel might be a viable option for those with mild to moderate acne. And you can find a treatment that will fit your budget.

About the Acne Chemical Peel

The purpose of these treatments is to remove the outer surface layer of the skin. To accomplish this, a solution that contains acid is applied to the area. After the treatment, the surface skin layer will peel and flake away, and healthy new skin will replace it. Not only will this new skin have fewer and less noticeable acne blemishes and scars, it will also be smoother, with fewer lines and wrinkles.

While a peel might have great results, the effects often aren't permanent. Acne blemishes might begin to reappear, and scarring may start to become more pronounced and visible. In those cases, you can either return to your dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon for another chemical peel treatment, or you can use an at-home peel.

Cost and Recovery Time

The cost of a chemical peel can vary widely, depending on the type you choose to have. A light chemical peel can average between $200 and $300, while a deep treatment can cost anywhere from $2000 to $5000, or even more. Fortunately, even a light peel can have benefits for those who suffer from acne.

How long it will take to recover from the procedure depends on the kind of peel you choose. If you have a light peel, you can be out and about, going about your business as normal, just a few hours later. However, for a deep peel, you would have to stay home and rest for around two weeks.

Possible Side Effects

Those who have this treatment should expect to experience some side effects. Those who have had a light or medium peel can expect some mild redness, dryness, stinging, flaking, and maybe some minor swelling.

Those who undergo a deep peel will usually experience more severe swelling. They might experience some pain, and will usually be given a pain medication to ease their discomfort.

There are many effective treatments for those who have acne or acne scarring. And you might find a chemical peel for acne to be a promising option.
