Cleaning Cedar Shingles, The Products And Methods

Feb 20, 2008
Cedar Shingles or Cedar "shakes" are used as a roofing material or for siding. Cleaning is necessary to extend the life of the shingle and also to keep them looking new. Cleaning them the wrong way, which most people do, could shorten their life. Why clean your cedar shingles? What cleaning product will do the best job? What equipment do you need? How to clean? Let's take a look.

Other than the fact that your homes roof or siding has become an eyesore, why would you want to clean your shingles? Have you inquired about replacement cost? $15-20,000 to replace the siding shingles, $25,000 for a roof! That should be enough reason to keep them clean. Mold, Black Algae, Moss, Lichen and Mildew love natural wood, they eat it and need to be kept off of your shingles. They hold moisture and this leads to rotting of the wood, their roots crack and dislodge shingles and sometimes lead to leaks. A simple cleaning will keep your cedar shingles looking new; it will also do wonders for keeping the value of your home where it should be.

The equipment you will need; Most of the equipment you probably already have, a ladder (with outrigger stabilizer bars for safety), a medium bristle scrub brush on an extendable pole, a garden style sprayer and a hose. I defiantly do not recommend using a pressure washer; the pressure will loosen and sometimes blow shingles right off the house. High pressure also cuts anywhere from 1/8th to a inch of the shingle thickness, this for sure will lead to curling shingles. If you choose the right shingle cleaning product, you will not need the high pressure thus preserving the integrity of the shingle.

The cleaning method for siding or roof shingles is the same. Mix your product in a separate bucket then transfer it into the pump sprayer. Take the hose and moisten an area to clean starting at the highest point and work your way down. After the area is moist, not drenched, apply your shingle cleaning solution with the sprayer, before it dries, scrub the area lightly with your scrub brush, then rinse completely with the hose until clear water is running off the shingles.

Finding the right cedar shingle cleaning product; Believe it or not this is the toughest part of the job. I strongly believe that if there is an environmentally safe cleaning product available then we should choose that one. Hazardous cleaning products such as bleach, TSP or chlorine based products will clean your shingles but there are more disadvantages to these products the advantages. First of all, they kill surrounding flowers, grass and shrubs. Secondly they severely dry out the wood shingles. Another reason is that they do not clean evenly, you will end up with some real light; almost white areas and some not so light. It will not look natural when you are finished. The smell from these products linger for weeks, if they drip on any painted surfaces, it will leave a stain. There are many reasons not to use toxic products. What you want to use is a product that is the opposite, environmentally safe, won't harm the plants, cleans evenly, and is non-staining with no strong fumes.

Choose an environmentally safe cedar shingle cleaing product, clean your shingles periodically and they will last and look new for a long time to come.
