How To Improve Your Digital Photography Skills

Feb 20, 2008
Everyone loves taking pictures, but some people just seem to be better at it than others. With the following tips, you too can start down the road of becoming a better digital photographer.

1. The light in your environment will make pictures look great.

Most digital cameras detect when a flash is needed, but oftentimes a picture will look better with natural light rather than the flash. This is particularly true for photographs of people; flashes tend to make us look pale. If there's not enough light to take a picture without a flash, use as much natural light as possible and supplement it with your digital camera's fill flash feature.

2. Don't forget about the background.

Make sure there isn't anything in the background of your picture that will seem out of place when you look at it later. Something like a portable toilet or a garbage truck in the background might ruin an otherwise great picture. Take a step or two to one side or the other to adjust where you're aiming and avoid awkward background artifacts.

3. Place the subject off-center in the frame.

It's always good to place the subject a little off-center in the frame. In fact, there's something called The Rule of Thirds that gives us some pretty good guidelines for how to pull this off. Imagine a tic-tac-toe criss-cross drawn on the frame. Now align the focal point(s) of the picture with one or more of the intersections formed by the imaginary lines. This will result in a much more interesting picture.

4. Use interesting angles.

Don't think you have to square up and take every picture head-on. Sometimes all the difference can be made by moving around and aiming from a different angle. Just get creative with it, you never know what will turn out to be a great-looking photograph. Also, don't forget to aim slightly down at the person's face. It will make them appear to be a little slimmer, which I'm sure everyone will appreciate.

5. Use the whole frame for your subject.

Get close enough to what you're aiming at to fill the entire frame with your subject. This will leave no doubt as to what the focus of the picture is when you look at it in the future.

I hope you enjoy these tips and put them to good use. Here's to taking great pictures and making great memories!
