The Trend Of Teenagers And Tanning Salons

Feb 22, 2008
Should you allow minors to tan at your salon? This is very likely going to be an issue that will come up. It is important that you give it some careful consideration. There are more and more teenagers out there turning to tanning salons to help them look great. They may want some color daily or for some occasion that is coming up such as a school dance or a vacation.

There may be laws in place though that prevent minors from using tanning salon services without the consent of their parents or their guardian. You need to be aware of such laws in your area so you don't get yourself into trouble. You may also want to implement your own policies before you allow them to come in to tan.

You may think it will be a hassle offering tanning services to teenagers but before you blow them off you need to know a couple of things. There is plenty of money to be made from this particular corner of the market. They will also buy tanning products from you so those sales will get a boost. It isn't uncommon for them to want to tan all year long either.

It is recommended that you have a parent or guardian sign a release in order for their minor to use the tanning facility. This is just a best practice and you need to also have contact information in the event of any emergency. Teenagers have a way of getting what they want so be careful of forged consent forms. It is a good idea to have the parent or guardian come in to complete the paperwork to avoid such issues.

Generally though there won't be too much trouble with it from the parent or guardians point of view. Many of them see nothing wrong with their teenager tanning and many of them encourage it. You can help with the cost of it by offering a family package or a discount when more than one person comes in together. Tanning is often an activity that moms and daughters enjoy doing together.

Everyone that uses your tanning salon should be well aware of the possible risks involved though. This involves both adults and teenagers. Make sure they know that it is possible that they can get skin cancer. Make sure they know they can damage their eyes if they don't use the protection you offer them. Even with this information you likely won't lose too many customers.

Make sure the teenagers are taking responsibility as well though. They need to sign the release form as well. This should only be done once they have read all of the information you provided. You want to make sure you aren't held liable for any issues that come up so this should be a priority.

One concern many tanning salon owners though is if minors are responsible enough to be using their tanning equipment. Make sure they know how to use everything as well as where the emergency shut off is. Should you find any person in general abusing the equipment then you need to ask them not to come back. This won't be limited just to minors though but to all of your customers.
