Do Tattoos Hurt?

Feb 24, 2008
Everybody wants to know if getting a tattoo is painful or not. It shouldn't be too painful when done right but bear in mind that you are being jabbed with a needle constantly! Two things will affect your experience more than any, the location on your body you have it done and the person who is doing it.

Most people say that body art will sting based on the spot where it is located. Spots that are surrounded by a lot of fat are usually much less painful. For instance, tattoos on the backside are usually not as painful to get. Having it done over somewhere where there is a lot of bone near the surface is the worst place to have it done, or sensitive areas.

Two locations where people don't generally experience much pain are on the side of the bottom leg and the uppermost area of the arm. If you are worried about tattoo pain, consider having your tat placed in one of these locations.

Getting a tattoo will hurt if you don't take good care of the tattoo at first. In a sense, the tattoo is a wound. It has to heal properly and that will not happen if you don't cleanse and treat it. You must keep a close eye on your tattoo if you want to prevent infections and complications.

There are a few cases of people whose body art gets contaminated and scabs a lot due to lack of attention. Most tattoo designers will tell you the correct way to maintain a fresh tattoo, but if you don't follow their advice you will most likely have a very painful experience.

Of course you may be doing everything right afterwards and still get it infected. In this case then it was probably the artist who passed on the infection. They should use brand new sterilised needles for you tattoo and plastic gloves. Check out the area they will be using before you pay for anything, and also if you can, go in and watch someone else having a tattoo so you can see the procedure they use first.

Most modern inks are very safe, but you need to make sure that you are not allergic to any of the ingredients that could be in them, as they will be being injected into your body! Check online to see what the common ingredients are and ask at the specific parlor.

Is having a tattoo painful? Sure, if you don't follow the proper precautions and carry out background research. To avoid a painful tattoo, have it done on a suitable part of your body and go to a parlor that comes recommended from someone you know who has a tattoo already from there!
