3 Effective Procedures For Treating Stretch Marks

Feb 24, 2008
It seems like everyone has their own surefire home remedy for treating stretch marks, from cocoa butter, to vitamin E, to Retin-A. But, while these topical treatments might have some effect, many people are looking for faster, more dramatic results.

There are cosmetic procedures that have proved to be very effective in helping to diminish, or even get rid of, stretch marks. Here are a few that you might consider.

Look Into Microdermabrasion

A microdermabrasion usually takes less than an hour. During the procedure, dead skin cells, including skin with color imperfections, are removed from the surface of the skin. As a result, stretch marks may be smoother and less visible.

Another benefit of microdermabrasion, besides the speed with which it can be done, is the lack of recovery time. You can leave the doctor's office, and continue going on about the rest of your day.

The Benefits of Laser Scar Reduction

Laser scar reduction, or laser scar removal, is a procedure that can drastically reduce the appearance of scars by more than 50 percent.

During the procedure, a laser is moved across the scarred area. This laser removes the top layer of skin, revealing another layer of skin. This newly revealed skin layer will heal and regenerate, and scarring won't be as pronounced. The result is that stretch marks won't be as deep, and their pink, purple or red color will be dramatically reduced.

Chemical Peels Can Also Be Beneficial

Chemical peels can help reduce or eliminate skin discolorations, like those you experience when you have stretch marks. They can also help make scars less pronounced and visible.

During the treatment, a solution that contains acid (like trichloroacetic acid or glycolic acid) is applied to the area. This solution removes dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. It also generates the production of new, healthy skin cells.

A chemical peel will both reduce the discoloration of your stretch marks, and make them less deep and noticeable.

A medium or deep chemical peel might have more dramatic results than a light peel. But you should consider the recovery time. Within a few hours of a light peel, you can be out and about, going about your daily routine. But with a medium or deep chemical peel, you will be advised to stay at home and rest for a week or two.

If you are looking for the best way of treating stretch marks, there are many options. After considering them all, you might decide that either microdermabrasion, laser scar reduction, or a chemical peel is the right option for you.
