Wooden And Metal Sheds

Feb 25, 2008
A metal shed is built upon a metal frame, sheets of metal are attached to this frame which joins them all together and forms a very solid and durable shed. The types of metal can vary but usually they will be aluminum, galvanized steel or corrugated iron. Metal sheds will tend to stand more wear and tear than a wooden shed which is a great advantage as well as being protected against fire and rotting. Remember though that metal can always go rusty so try to look for galvanized steel to prevent this problem.

A slight disadvantage of metals sheds can occur if they are made out of sheets of metal which are quite thin. If they are thin then they can be dented quite easily. This will probably be a more urgent problem if you reside in an area where vandals will target small buildings such as this. Also if it is obvious that valuable equipment is kept inside it may become a target for thieves, even more so if the metal shed is used as business storage. If you do use a metal shed in this way then you should make sure that you have the right type of insurance cover against this.

The foundation for a metal shed should be made of concrete as to give the shed as secure a base as possible. You should secure the shed to the foundation by using strong bolts. If it is not secured properly then a metal shed can cause a lot of damage, obviously it weighs a lot and could hurt someone or damage property.

What people tend to like about wooden sheds is how they have much more of a natural look about them, therefore they can easily blend into a garden without being an eye sore or standing out too much. However there are some disadvantages to having a wooden shed instead of a metal or plastic shed.

However you should take care that you look after the wood as it can sometimes become rotten or start to split, especially in bad weather conditions which can test the wood. To help prevent these problems you can buy wood varnishes and treatments which are designed to stop them from happening.

It really is worth spending time on the upkeep and maintenance of your wooden shed so that the wood stays in good condition over the years and will not develop problems. Examples of common problems are things like damage through exposure to UV light, weather and climate conditions, as well as pest problems such as wood mites.

There are a number of wood stains, varnishes and preservatives which you can use to minimize the effects of rain, snow, ultra violet light, wood mites, and weather conditions. These come in a wide range of colours and varieties so that you can customize the look of your shed, this ensures that you don't lose the character of the shed and it will still blend in well with your garden.

It is worth knowing that there are certain types of wood which are naturally resistant to rain damage. An example of this is cedar which is ideal for this. You may find that you pay a little more for sheds that have been made out of this material but hopefully you will benefit from less rain-related maintenance problems.
